Headshot Lighting Inspiration: Background

In addition to getting the light just right for the star of your headshot (you), we also have to consider the rest of the scene and how it might play into the mood of the image. Might you choose a darker, moody background to lend to an air of mystery? Something a bit brighter and to clearly introduce yourself? Or perhaps add a little visual interest by adding some variation into the background? Let’s look at a couple examples for inspiration, bearing in mind that these are a starting point, and there are countless other options we might want to play with.

Option 1

An Unlit Background

Dark and rich background feels luxurious to me. I little less in your face, and makes you look a little closer to appreciate the subject of the photo.

Option 2

The evenly lit background

Adding an even light to the background, we brighten up the image as a whole and amp up the saturation. Has a bit more pop, while still remaining uniform.

Option 3

A subtle gradient

Adding a subtle gradient of light to the background helps the subject stand out more, giving more separation while maintaining the rich color of the background. Maybe you find this a bit more interesting than a solid color?

Option 4

Adding some shape to the light

Here we are playing on the theme of adding more separation between the subject and the background, but doing it in a slightly different way. A little more unique than your standard headshot, without being too wild.

Option 5

Some dappled light

An overall darker background with some dappled light added. Similar richness to the unlit background, but adding a little more visual interest to the scene.

Option 6

Oh look, a window frame

Another example of how we can add a little variation to the background. There are many options of what we might choose to project on the background. I often feel like a nice blurry window shape suits the professional vibe without being too out distracting

Doesn’t just work with color

So far all the examples you’ve seen are on a colored background, and you’ve no doubt noticed how changing the light will change not only the brightness, but also the saturation. When we shift to a neutral background like grey, the saturation is taken out of the equation entirely. We’re left with how shaping the light can create separation from the background, as well as adding some variety to keep the image interesting.
